Orodental and health care of children suffering from developmental delay

Abstract

Oral and dental hygiene is crucial, especially for children with developmental delays (DD) and disabilities, as they often face physical and cognitive challenges that hinder self-care. These children typically show limited interest in maintaining oral hygiene, and factors such as poor socioeconomic conditions further contribute to neglect. Managing their treatment, particularly dental procedures, is difficult due to their uncooperative behavior. Early Intervention Centers (EICs), especially those under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) initiative in India—now known as District Early Intervention Centers (DEICs)—play a vital role in addressing these challenges. DEICs provide multidisciplinary care, including therapy and dental treatment, under one roof. This integrated approach facilitates early diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation of children with DD. Focusing on both physical and mental health, along with dental care, helps improve their overall quality of life. This article highlights strategies for managing dental issues and enhancing the well-being of children with developmental disabilities.
