Formulation and evaluation of beta-sitosterol enriched herbal scalp serum

Abstract

Herbal based formulations are gaining significant attention in dermatological and cosmetic applications due to their natural origin, biocompatibility, and lower risk of side effects compared to synthetic alternatives. In line with this growing trend, a scalp serum was formulated incorporating Beta-Sitosterol, an active phytosterol isolated from Hemidesmus indicus, alongside nutrient-rich oils including jojoba, argan, lavender, vitamin E, and peppermint oil. This combination was selected for its potential to support follicular health, improve scalp microcirculation, and promote hair growth. The formulation process involved the isolation of Beta-Sitosterol using standard phytochemical techniques, followed by its integration into a stable, anhydrous oil base. The serum was then subjected to physicochemical evaluation, including pH analysis, viscosity measurement, and stability testing under varying conditions. Results indicated that the serum maintained optimal pH levels, demonstrated appropriate viscosity for topical application, and showed no signs of phase separation or degradation over time. These findings highlight the potential of this herbal, Beta-Sitosterol-enriched serum as a natural, non-invasive approach to addressing hair thinning and promoting scalp vitality. Further clinical evaluation is necessary to substantiate its therapeutic effectiveness in human subjects.
