Comparative analysis of health-related physical fitness components among rural and urban school children in Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

The physical-fitness levels of children are influenced by a range of environmental, socioeconomic and lifestyle factors. This study aimed to compare health-related physical-fitness components in rural and urban school-children in Uttar Pradesh. A total of 50 students—25 from rural areas and 25 from urban areas—were selected for the study. Health-related fitness components, including cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and body composition, were assessed using standardised tests. An independent t-test was applied to determine significant differences between rural and urban school-children.The findings indicate that rural children exhibit higher cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength, whereas urban children demonstrate better flexibility. Body-composition analysis suggests a higher prevalence of obesity among urban children, likely linked to sedentary lifestyles and dietary patterns. These results highlight the need for tailored physical-education programmes that address the specific fitness requirements of both rural and urban children. Future research should explore the impact of lifestyle interventions on improving overall physical fitness among school-aged children.
