Supplementation of Padina gymnospora, an algal based formulated feed on the non-specific humoral and cellular immune response in cultivable brackish water farmed fish Etroplus suratensis

International Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Studies · 2025 · Vol. 13(3) · pp. 243–249

Abstract

Thisrnstudy was to assess the potential of replacing conventional fish meal used inrnfish diet with Padina gymnospora supplementation under laboratoryrnfeeding conditions for 90 days on the immune responses in fingerlings of Etroplusrnsuratensis between fishes fed on a control diet comprising groundnut basedrnfeed and experimental fishes fed on a 10% and 30% algal based diet. Thernnon-specific humoral immune response in skin mucus on anti-protease activitiesrnimproved in the fishes fed on experimental diet fed group, while no changesrnobserved in proteases activity demonstrating enhanced innate immune responses.rnNon-specific cellular immune response in head kidney analysed by respiratoryrnburst activity [Reactive oxygen specific (ROS) and Reactive nitrogen speciesrn(RNS)] in kidney cells increased, indicating stronger cellular immunity in fishrnfed with algal diets.
