Investigating gender differences in sleep quality among physical education trainees

Abstract

This study examined the sleep quality of male and female physical education trainees at Kuvempu University using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). A total of 40 trainees (20 males and 20 females), aged 21-26 years, were evaluated. Descriptive statistical techniques were applied to explore gender-based differences in sleep quality. The results indicated that males experienced poorer overall sleep quality, with a higher mean TOTAL score (7.35) compared to females (5.05). Significant gender differences were identified in overall sleep quality (OSQ) and reliance on sleep aids (MEDS). Correlation analysis revealed significant associations between sleep latency (LATEN) and day dysfunction (DAYDYS) in both genders, with males showing stronger relationships between sleep efficiency (SE) and overall sleep quality. Paired t-test analysis indicated significant differences in OSQ, MEDS, and TOTAL scores across paired measures, while variables such as sleep duration (DURAT) and sleep disturbances (DISTB) remained stable. These findings highlight the importance of gender-specific interventions to enhance sleep quality and overall well-being among physical education trainees.
