Redefining the standard of care for intertrochanteric hip fractures in the elderly: From surgical precision to accelerated recovery

Abstract

Aim & Objective: This review aims to redefine the standard of care for intertrochanteric hip fractures (ITHFs) in elderly patients, focusing on advancements in surgical techniques and rehabilitation strategies that promote surgical precision and accelerated recovery. Background/Introduction: Intertrochanteric hip fractures are prevalent in the elderly, often resulting in poor outcomes such as prolonged hospitalization, loss of independence, and increased mortality. Historically, treatment has relied on basic surgical procedures and conservative rehabilitation. However, recent innovations have transformed the management of these fractures, emphasizing faster recovery, reduced complication rates, and improved functional outcomes. Material and Methods: A comprehensive review of the latest literature, including randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, and meta-analyses, was conducted to assess the current approaches to surgical management and postoperative rehabilitation for elderly patients with ITHFs. Studies from the past decade were analyzed to identify trends, innovations, and evidence-based practices in fracture fixation and recovery strategies. Results: Recent studies suggest that newer fixation techniques, including intramedullary nailing and dynamic hip screws, result in greater fracture stability, lower complication rates, and improved functional outcomes. The ability to mobilize patients early after surgery has also been shown to accelerate recovery and reduce hospital stays. Rehabilitation protocols that emphasize individualized care, early weight-bearing, and targeted physiotherapy have proven effective in enhancing recovery times and minimizing long-term disability. Conclusion: The management of ITHFs in elderly patients has evolved significantly, with surgical precision and early recovery becoming central to modern treatment strategies. By integrating advanced fixation techniques with personalized rehabilitation plans, healthcare providers can optimize outcomes, reduce complications, and improve the quality of life for elderly patients suffering from these fractures.
