Application of nanotechnology in floriculture
Abstract
Nanotechnology is increasingly recognized as a powerful innovation in floriculture offering groundbreaking solutions to the complex challenges confronting the floral industry. This review synthesizes the latest advancements and evaluates the broad spectrum of potential applications of nanotechnology within this sector. A primary focus is on how nanotechnology enhances plant nutrition and health by enabling the precise delivery of fertilizers, nutrients and pesticides through nanoparticle-based systems. Such targeted delivery mechanisms promote plant vigor while minimizing input waste and environmental contamination. In addition, the application of nanoscale biosensors for real-time pathogen and pest detection is transforming disease management by allowing for early intervention thereby reducing dependency on conventional chemical controls. The paper further explores the role of nanostructured films and coatings in promoting seed germination, accelerating plant growth and improving stress resilience. It also highlights how incorporating nanomaterials into soil and substrate systems can enhance nutrient availability, water retention and overall soil fertility—leading to greater resource efficiency and crop productivity. In summary, the review highlights nanotechnology’s transformative impact on the future of floriculture. By enabling smarter more sustainable production practices it holds promise for creating resilient and eco-friendly systems. Continued research, cross-disciplinary collaboration and environmental safeguards are recommended to fully harness the benefits of nanotechnology in this dynamic field.
