Climate resilience of millets: A sustainable solution for future agriculture
Abstract
Despite having a great deal of potential to address global issues including food insecurity, hunger, and climate change, millets—a genus of small-seeded grasses—are underutilized in contemporary agriculture. With their low water requirements and amazing resistance to heat and drought, millets show remarkable resilience in the face of growing climate-related disruptions, such as unpredictable weather patterns, rising temperatures, and water scarcity. They are a good climate-smart substitute for conventional staple crops because of these qualities providing a long-term means of guaranteeing food security in areas that are susceptible. Beyond its positive effects on the environment, millets are incredibly nutrient-dense, high in vitamins, dietary fibre, proteins, and vital minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron. Their gluten-free status and low glycaemic index add to their allure, making them a crucial nutritional element for treating micronutrient shortages and metabolic diseases like diabetes, especially in developing nations. Since millets are a sustainable crop, the ecological impact of food production is decreased because they require fewer agricultural inputs. Because they can thrive on unfavourable soils with few resources which is a crucial part of resilient agricultural systems that can resist disturbances brought on by climate change. In global food systems, millets are still under-represented despite their many benefits. Thus, a paradigm change is required, one that reinforces the importance of millets for food security and sustainable agriculture. With the help of focused policy and consumer education, including millets into modern farming methods might greatly improve global nutrition, aid in the mitigation of climate change, and promote sustainable, climate-resilient food production systems around the globe.
