Fracture resistance evaluation of crowns in endodontically treated anterior teeth restored with glass fiber posts: A literature review

International Journal of Applied Dental Sciences · 2025 · Vol. 11(2) · pp. 193–196

Abstract

Introduction: The restoration of endodontically treated anterior teeth represents a significant clinical challenge, both from a functional and esthetic standpoint. The importance of this topic lies not only in its frequency in daily dental practice but also in the medical and economic implications associated with restoration failure. Objective: To analyze the factors influencing the effect of structural loss on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated anterior teeth, the influence of fiberglass posts on stress distribution and root reinforcement, the type of crown and its impact on fracture resistance, and clinical considerations and evidence-based recommendations. Methodology: An electronic search was conducted through PubMed and NCBI using the terms: “fracture,” “crown,” “restorative materials,” “zirconia crown,” and “endodontically treated teeth.” Results: The structural loss caused by endodontic access and caries removal significantly decreases the mechanical resistance of anterior teeth, making them more vulnerable to fracture. Fiberglass posts have an elastic modulus similar to that of dentin, which allows for a more uniform stress distribution and reduces the risk of root fractures. Conclusion: The restoration of endodontically treated anterior teeth presents a major clinical challenge due to structural loss and the need to maintain fracture resistance. The preservation of the remaining dentin, especially in the pericervical region, is essential to maintaining the integrity of the tooth.
