Effects of intraoral polishing of lithium disilicate restorations in the oral cavity

Abstract

Introduction: Lithium disilicate is a preferred choice for dental restorations due to its strength, esthetics and versatility. Its processing using CAD/CAM techniques allows for efficiency and customization. However, clinical adjustments increase surface roughness, affecting esthetics, hygiene and durability. Intraoral polishing, with systems such as OptraFine and Dialite LD, is essential to restore smoothness, prevent biofilm buildup and improve clinical outcomes. Understanding these aspects optimizes protocols, ensuring functional, long-lasting and aesthetically satisfying restorations. Aim: To evaluate the effects of intraoral polishing on lithium disilicate restorations, considering its impact on surface roughness, aesthetics, structural strength and oral health. Methodology: Through an exhaustive process of searching and analyzing articles published in different databases, such as PubMed, SCOPUS and Google Scholar, with emphasis on the last 5 years. These articles were selected due to their publication in high-impact journals. The keywords used for the search were “POLISH SYSTEM”, “LITHIUM DISILICATE”, “ROUGHNESS”. The keywords were used individually, as well as each of them related to each other. Results: Lithium disilicate (LD) is a key material in restorative dentistry, known for its versatile esthetic strength and biocompatibility. Its application includes crowns, veneers, inlays and bridges. Systems such as IPS e.max have improved its durability and esthetics. Surface roughness affects its clinical performance, so intraoral polishing with systems such as OptraFine and Dialite LD optimizes esthetics, hygiene and strength. Appropriate protocols are essential to ensure long-lasting and successful restorations. Conclusion: Lithium disilicate has revolutionized restorative dentistry due to its superior mechanical strength, esthetics, and biocompatibility. Its popularity is due to versatile applications, from crowns to complex restorations. However, surface roughness represents a challenge, affecting plaque accumulation and esthetics. Proper polishing and glazing protocols are essential to optimize long-term clinical results.
