Recent innovations in fortifying organic manure for enhanced agricultural productivity

International Journal of Research in Agronomy · 2025 · Vol. 8(5) · pp. 695–700

Abstract

The fortification of organic manure is emerging as a critical strategy for improving soil fertility, enhancing crop productivity, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. This review explores various fortification techniques, including the addition of chemical nutrients, microbial inoculants, and bio-stimulants, aimed at enhancing the nutrient content and bioavailability of organic manures. Fortified organic manures offer numerous benefits, such as improved nutrient release patterns, better soil microbial health, and reduced dependency on synthetic fertilizers, contributing to more sustainable farming systems. However, the fortification process also faces challenges, including the risk of nutrient imbalances, high costs, inconsistent nutrient release, and potential environmental impacts from some additives. Despite these challenges, the fortification of organic manure holds significant promise in addressing nutrient deficiencies in soils, especially in regions facing soil degradation and declining agricultural productivity. Future research should focus on optimizing fortification methods, understanding long-term soil health impacts, and assessing the environmental sustainability of fortified organic manures. Furthermore, developing cost-effective fortification materials and improving access for smallholder farmers in developing regions are crucial for widespread adoption. This review highlights the importance of continued research and innovation in fortification techniques, with the potential to revolutionize soil management practices and support global food security in an environmentally sustainable manner.
