Gross and biometrical studies on the mandible of Indian wild boar (Sus scrofa cristatus)
Abstract
The present work was conducted to study the gross morphological and biometrical characteristics of adult Indian wild boar (Sus scrofa cristatus) mandible. The mandible was procured from the Rajaji Tiger Reserve, Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The mandible was prepared and cleaned using standard techniques. The distinguishing features of various standard views of the mandible, such as lateral, caudal, and dorsal views, as well as its foramina, were described and discussed. The mandible was a paired bone with an ossified mandibular symphysis, which formed an immovable joint. Each part of the mandible has a ramus and body. The dental formula was confirmed, revealing the presence of 44 teeth. The data gathered can be utilized to compare mandibles with those from other related species. The average length and height of the mandible is 20.47±0.02 cm and 9.77±0.07 cm respectively. The lateral alveolar root to mental foramen (5.51±0.004 cm), mental foramen to mandibular border (15.54±0.009 cm), mandibular foramen to the base of the mandible (4.33±0.01 cm), caudal border of the mandible to below the mandibular foramen (3.36±0.005 cm) and condyloid fossa to the base of the mandible (9.19±0.006 cm).
