Analyzing the feeding behaviour of common Myna (Acridotheres tristis) at Isabella Thoburn College, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

Acridotheres tristis is the scientific name for the Common Myna. These birds, which are members of the Sturnidae family, are found throughout the Indian subcontinent and other regions of the world due to their invasive characteristics. Common Myna is gregarious birds that are frequently seen foraging in pairs or small groups. It is well known that these medium-sized passerines thrive in urban settings. Common Myna have a diverse range of food preferences and adaptable feeding habits due to their omnivorous nature. This study was conducted at Isabella Thoburn College, Lucknow, from January 1, 2025, to April 15, 2025. The Focal Sampling method was employed to gather behavioural data. The results indicate that Common Myna show a marked preference for food provided by humans compared to natural sources like insects and seeds. Pecking and tearing were observed as common feeding techniques. The study also found that the Common Myna readily adapts its feeding behaviour according to the availability of resources across different seasons.
