Income inequality and constraints analysis of MGNREGA beneficiaries in rural households

Abstract

This study explores how the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has influenced employment generation and income inequality among rural households in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district. Data were collected through personal interviews and analysed using the Gini coefficient and Garrett ranking method. The analysis highlights the program’s positive impact on employment levels and its role in reducing income disparity, while also identifying key challenges faced by MGNREGA participants in the region. By implementing fair compensation practices, promoting transparency and fairness, improving working conditions, and streamlining administrative processes, it is possible to create a more equitable work environment that benefits both workers and employers.
