An economic analysis on marketing of layer bird (Egg) in Samastipur district of Bihar

Abstract

Layer birds are selectively bred for high-efficiency egg production and contribute significantly to the poultry sector. These birds, predominantly hens, are maintained under scientific management practices to enhance productivity, egg quality, and consistency. Typically commencing egg-laying at 18 to 20 weeks of age, they continue for an extended period of up to 72 weeks or more. The present study, titled “An Economic Analysis on Marketing of Layer Bird Egg in Samastipur District of Bihar”, was conducted in the Samastipur district, focusing on Tajpur block, which was purposively selected based on its potential in layer bird rearing. A sample comprising five percent of such villages and ten percent of respondents from those villages was chosen randomly. The study examined three marketing channels. In Channel-I, the producer received a net price of ₹1510.50, with a marketing cost and price spread of ₹39.50, and a marketing efficiency of 38.74%. In Channel-II, the net price was ₹1440.50, marketing cost ₹106.50, margin ₹105.00, and price spread ₹211.50, resulting in a marketing efficiency of 6.81%. Channel-III reflected a similar net price of ₹1440.50, with marketing cost ₹153.50, margin ₹151.00, and a price spread of ₹304.50, leading to the lowest marketing efficiency of 4.73%. The findings highlight significant variation in marketing efficiency across the three channels, emphasizing the need for improving marketing mechanisms to enhance producers’ profitability.
