Exploring the potential of traditional medicinal herbs in Leukemia treatment: A comprehensive review of types, symptoms and therapeutic approaches

Abstract

Leukemia is a type of blood cancer that affects the production of blood cells in the bone marrow. It is characterized by the abnormal growth of white blood cells, which can lead to anemia, bleeding, and infections. There are several types of leukemia, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The symptoms and treatment vary depending on the type and stage of the disease. Traditional medicinal herbs, such as Cephalotaxus harringtonia, Catharanthus roseus, Allium sativum, Bromelain, and Curcuma longa, have shown promise in treating leukemia due to their anti-leukemic properties. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted therapy are also used to treat leukemia. Understanding the genetic and epigenetic changes that occur in leukemia is crucial for developing effective treatments. This review aims to provide an overview of the different types of leukemia, their symptoms, treatment and the potential of traditional medicinal herbs in treating this disease.
