Study of anthelmintic activity of costus igneus roots against Indian earthworm

Abstract

This study investigates the anthelmintic activity of methanolic extracts from roots of Costus igneus (insulin plant) against the Indian earthworm Pheretima posthuma. Using varying concentrations (10 mg/ml to 40 mg/ml) of the extract, the evaluation focused on paralysis and death times of the worms. The results indicate a dose-dependent effect, with the 40 mg/ml concentration demonstrating significant efficacy by causing paralysis in 22 seconds and death in 29 seconds. These findings affirm the potential use of Costus igneus roots as a natural anthelmintic agent.
