An overview of constraints faced by pastoralists dairy farmers of Punjab about Improved dairy farming practices

Abstract

The present study was conducted to identify and prioritize the key constraints faced by pastoralist dairy farmers in Punjab that hinder the uptake of improved dairy farming techniques. Primary data were collected from pastoralist respondents across all the three regions (Malwa, Majha and Doaba) of Punjab. The collected data were then analyzed using Garrett’s ranking method to identify and prioritize the constraints faced by the respondents. The findings reveal that the non-availability of semen and the high cost of artificial insemination are the most pressing barriers. These are followed by limited access to Veterinary services, high feed costs, and continued reliance on traditional knowledge systems. Land constraints, lack of awareness, and inadequate financial resources further exacerbate the situation. Importantly, the study highlights that these constraints are not due to resistance from pastoralists but are rooted in infrastructural and informational gaps. The results underline the need for focused policy interventions such as strengthening Veterinary infrastructure, making breeding inputs more accessible, and designing locally tailored extension programs. Addressing these challenges can significantly improve dairy productivity, enhance farmer livelihoods, and contribute to the broader goals of inclusive agricultural development.
