Present status of sport fisheries in Himalayan region of India: A comprehensive review

Abstract

Sport fisheries, particularly targeting Mahseer (Tor spp.) and Trout (Oncorhynchus and Salmo spp.), represents an important aspect for both ecological and economic potential in the Himalayan region of India. The Indian Himalayan region (IHR), characterised by its diverse streams, rivers, and lakes, host both exotic trout species and indigenous Mahseer, making them ideal locations for anglers. Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the Northeast area of India have ample fishing prospects, with numerous streams, rivers, and lakes that yield significant catches. The development of sport fishing in these regions might strengthen local economies, provide employment, and enhance adventure tourism. However, overfishing, pollution, and habitat degradation are significant risks to sport fish populations; highlighting the need for sustainable management strategies to ensure their long-term survival and continuation of this popular leisure activity in the Indian Himalayas.
