Trait associations and path analysis for yield and quality attributes in exotic and indigenous rice germplasm lines of rice (Oryza sativa L.)
Abstract
The present study was conducted at the Seed Breeding Farm, Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, College of Agriculture, J.N.K.V.V., Jabalpur, during Kharif 2013, to assess genetic variability, heritability, and trait associations and direct and indirect effects of yield attributes in 110 rice germplasm lines using a randomized complete block design with three replications. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among genotypes for all traits, indicating substantial genetic variation. Correlation and path coefficient analyses identified key yield-contributing traits. Average panicle weight, panicle index, harvest index, number of filled spikelets per panicle, plant height, number of productive tillers per plant, hulling percentage, and 1000-grain weight exhibited strong positive correlations with grain yield and also exerted a high positive direct effect. These traits should be prioritized in selection strategies for genetic enhancement of grain yield in rice. The findings provide valuable insights for developing high-yielding rice genotypes through targeted breeding approaches.
