Comparative study of allopathyic antifungal drug and aqueous henna leaf extract on canine mycotic dermatitis: An in vivo study

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of oral antifungal treatments (itraconazole and ketoconazole) and topical aqueous henna leaf extract in treating fungal dermatitis in dogs. Thirty-six dogs diagnosed with mycotic dermatitis were treated with different therapeutic protocols. Results showed that combined treatment of oral itraconazole with henna extract resulted in complete lesion recovery within 19 days, while ketoconazole combined with henna extract showed the fastest recovery in 16 days. Treatment with henna alone took 26 days, while systemic antifungals alone resulted in recovery within 21 to 23 days. The study suggests that henna extract enhances the effectiveness of antifungal treatments in canine dermatophyte infections.
