Effect of organic and inorganic phosphorus levels on growth and yield of maize (Zea mays L)

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at Crop Research Farm (CRF) of Department of Agronomy, Sam Higginbottom University Institute of Agriculture Sciences, on Zea mays in Zaid season. The experiment was conducted on the effect of organic and inorganic sources of phosphorus on growth and yield of maize. It has laid out by randomized block design with 3 replications and 10 treatments. The factors for the experiment were organic sources (FYM-15 t/ha, Poultry manure-0.8 t/ha, vermicompost-2 t/ha) and 3 levels of inorganic phosphorus @ 30, 45 & 60 kg/ha through DAP along with the control includes NPK (120:60:40 Kg/ha). The results shown that the highest plant height (175.9 cm), number of cobs/plant (1.9), number of rows/cobs (14.2), number of grains/rows (28.0), Seed index (14.4 g), grain yield (3302.3 kg/ha), stover yield (4833.3 kg/ha) and harvest index (40.6%) was reported in treatment No.10 i.e. application of 0.8 t/ha of poultry manure along with 60 kg/ha of phosphorus through DAP. Aforesaid treatment has highest gross return (290151.3 INR/ha), net return (215610.5 INR/ha) and B: C ratio (2.8).
