Gossypiboma mimicking a complex ovarian mass: A diagnostic challenge

Abstract

Gossypiboma refers to the retention of surgical sponges or gauze within the body postoperatively. This case report describes a 38-year-old female with a history of three cesarean sections presenting with persistent lower abdominal pain, with initial radiological investigations suggesting a complex ovarian lesion. However, intraoperative findings revealed a retained surgical sponge. This case emphasizes the diagnostic challenges and the importance of adherence to surgical protocols.
