Osteosarcoma of the heel, a rare cause of Talalgia: A case report and review of the literature from the orthopedics-traumatology department of the Ignace Deen University Hospital in Conakry

Abstract

Introduction: Osteosarcoma of the Heel is rare and can pose a diagnostic challenge. We report a case treated surgically. Case report: A 42-year-old female patient presented with talalgia and swelling of the left Heel, which had been progressing for 8 months. Physical examination revealed a firm, painless, and mobile swelling of the left Heel on the plantar surface, with hyperkeratinization of the overlying skin. An X-ray of the left Heel revealed a bony outgrowth on the inferior surface of the calcaneus. Surgery was indicated, and oncological resection was performed. Histopathological examination confirmed a fibroblastic osteosarcoma. The 8-month follow-up was marked by complete regression of the talalgia and no tumor recurrence. Conclusion: Osteosarcoma is rare in the calcaneus. The clinical picture is unremarkable. Treatment is based on surgery that is as carcinogenic as possible.
