Case of bilateral blindness concurrent with Closantel intoxication in goat

Abstract

A 4.6-month-old goat was presented to our clinic with a history of sudden bilateral blindness and loss of appetite. The clinical signs recorded were elevated temperature, head pressing, loose faeces, oro-nasal discharge, and mild coughing. Ophthalmological examination showed absence of menace and pupillary light reflexes, but with an intact palpebral reflex. Blood tests revealed neutrophilic leukocytosis with a left shift, while faecal and blood examinations showed no parasites. It came to our knowledge that the owner has recently dewormed his goat 5 days ago with an overdosage of Closantel dewormer. The goat was then subjected to different treatments that included Dexamethasone 1.2 ml IM bid for 7 days and Neurokind 5 ml bid PO for 10 days. After 10 days post treatment, the owner reported notable improvement in the goat’s clinical signs. This case undercovers the importance of accurate weighing of animals before administering Closantel to ensure proper dosage.
