Interrelationship between physical fitness, mental attributes, and physiological responses among basketball players of varying proficiency

Abstract

Basketball demands more than just athletic ability; it is a physically demanding team sport that also calls for strong mental focus and efficient physiological function. This study aims to understand how these three aspects physical fitness, mental strength, and physiological response work together in basketball players with different levels of playing experience within the Indian setting. A total of ninety male players, grouped as novice, intermediate, and elite based on their proficiency, were included in the study. Their physical capabilities were examined through sprint, agility, and endurance tests. To assess psychological traits, the study used Indian-standard motivation and anxiety evaluation tools. Key physiological indicators like resting heart rate and blood lactate levels were also measured. The results showed that elite players consistently outperformed others in physical, mental, and physiological metrics. Notably, a strong link was found between VO₂ max and motivation, as well as an inverse relationship between anxiety and heart rate recovery. These observations highlight the importance of a well-rounded training program that develops physical skills, psychological preparedness, and physiological efficiency for basketball players in India.
