Preliminary analysis of fishkeeping in western são paulo state - Brazil: Does local practice adhere to national standards?

Abstract

Fishkeeping has significant economic potential. The most cultivated ornamental fish in the world are Paracheirodon innesi and Poecilia reticulata. Brazil has influence in exports, with great potential for growth in the production of ornamental fish. The study characterized the regional profile of aquarists in the State of São Paulo - Brazil. Questions were developed to understand details of the practice of fishkeeping. It was observed that fishkeeping is an individual practice, mostly male and with a practice time between 11 and 20 years. The most cultivated species is Hyphessobrycon eques and the most sought after is Cyprinus carpio. It was found that 54.84% of aquarists spend up to US$ 10.00 per month on the hobby. It is concluded that fishkeeping is a long-lasting hobby, but little explored. Factors such as market value and hardiness of the species are decisive in the consolidation of fishkeeping.
