Antibiotic sensitivity profiling in canine prostatic disorders: A clinical investigation from Kolkata, West Bengal

Abstract

Prostatic disorders in dogs, which include benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, prostatic cysts, and abscesses, are common in intact, uncastrated male dogs, particularly among older populations. Bacterial infections, such as prostatitis and prostatic abscesses, often complicate these conditions, which require effective antibiotic therapy. This study evaluates antibiotic sensitivity patterns in 24 clinical cases of canine prostatic disorders presented at the Department of Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, from March to December 2023. Samples from ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (USG-FNAC) were subjected to Antibiotic Sensitivity Testing (ABST). Enrofloxacin demonstrated the highest sensitivity across all bacterial isolates, particularly in prostatitis and prostatic abscess cases, which may be because of its ability to penetrate the blood-prostatic barrier. These findings emphasize the importance of ABST in guiding targeted antibiotic therapy for optimal clinical outcomes in canine prostatic disorders.
