A Study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding optional vaccines and their preventable diseases among mothers attending paediatric OPD

Abstract

Aims 1. To assess mothers' knowledge regarding optional vaccines and their preventable diseases. 2. To evaluate the effectiveness of a structured teaching programme. 3. To examine the association between mothers' knowledge and selected socio-demographic variables. Materials and Methods: An evaluative approach with a one-group pre-test, post-test pre-experimental design was adopted. The study included 60 mothers with children under six months, attending the Paediatric OPD of HSK Hospital and Research Centre, Bagalkot. Data collection tools included a structured questionnaire and interview schedule. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for analysis. Results: The study revealed that most mothers initially had average knowledge about optional vaccines. Post-intervention, a significant improvement was observed, with the majority demonstrating good to excellent knowledge. Educational status and family income were significantly associated with knowledge levels. Conclusion: Structured teaching programs effectively improve mothers' awareness regarding optional vaccines, emphasizing the need for regular educational interventions.
