Recent advances in obturating materials used in pediatric dentistry: A review article

Abstract

Pulpectomy is a crucial endodontic procedure in pediatric dentistry, aimed at preserving primary teeth by eliminating necrotic pulp tissue and filling the root canals with a resorbable, biocompatible material. The success of pulpectomy heavily depends on the choice of obturating material, which should ideally be resorbable, antiseptic, non-irritating to the underlying permanent tooth, radiopaque, and easy to insert and remove. Traditionally, Zinc Oxide Eugenol (ZOE) has been the most widely used material, but its limitations such as delayed resorption, periapical irritation, and tooth discoloration have prompted the exploration of alternatives. Recent studies have evaluated novel combinations and materials, including calcium hydroxide-based pastes, iodoform-containing formulations, and herbal additives like Aloe vera and Ocimum sanctum, ozone oil mixes, and innovative biomaterials such as Chitra HAP-FIL. These materials offer improved biocompatibility, resorption rates matching physiological root resorption, and enhanced antimicrobial properties. Despite promising clinical and radiographic outcomes with several alternatives, the search for an ideal obturating material for primary teeth remains ongoing, emphasizing the need for continued research and development.
