Endurance and Displacement: The Ethical Vision in Kamala Markandaya’s Novels

Abstract

This paper offers a comprehensive examination of Kamala Markandaya’s literary legacy as a pioneering voice in Indian English fiction. Through her exploration of postcolonial India’s socio-political and cultural landscape, Markandaya addresses enduring tensions between tradition and modernity, rural poverty and industrial progress, faith and rationality, and the intersections of gender, class, and cultural identity. Her fiction—particularly novels such as Nectar in a Sieve, Some Inner Fury, A Silence of Desire, The Nowhere Man, and Pleasure City—foregrounds the lived experiences of women and marginalized individuals navigating the ruptures of colonial history and contemporary transformation. Drawing on postcolonial theory and feminist critique, this study analyzes the thematic richness, psychological insight, and narrative complexity of Markandaya’s work. Her diasporic perspective enables her to critically reflect on both Indian tradition and Western modernity, often through characters caught between opposing cultural forces.
