Understanding fringe village dynamics through participatory learning: A case study from Pakke tiger reserve, Arunachal Pradesh

Abstract

This study investigated the dynamics of Darlong Niti, a fringe village within Pakke Tiger Reserve, through a participatory learning approach led by students of Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science during the 2024-2025 academic year. Utilizing Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) and Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniques such as in-depth interviews and group discussions, along with tools like transect walks, social mapping, seasonal calendars, resource and mobility mapping, the study provided a multidimensional understanding of the village ecosystem, with a focus on agro-livestock prospects. A SWOT-TOWS analysis was also conducted to critically evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats associated with livestock rearing in the village, highlighting its potential for sustainable livelihood development and resilience in fringe forest communities. The findings revealed a community deeply rooted in traditional knowledge, with strong social cohesion and sustainable practices, yet facing challenges such as wildlife conflict, limited veterinary resources, disease outbreaks, and seasonal fodder scarcity. The integration of traditional wisdom with scientific interventions presented significant opportunities for livestock-based entrepreneurship, eco-tourism, and climate-resilient agriculture. The participatory method empowered both students and villagers, fostering mutual learning and generating locally tailored strategies to enhance rural resilience, resource management and community-driven development.
