Novel extraction approaches for maximizing the recovery of nutraceutical chemical-relevant antioxidants properties from Zingiber officinale

Abstract

This study investigated the antioxidant potential of Zingiber officinale root extracts obtained via hydro-ethanolic maceration, aqueous infusion, and an innovative, low-temperature (42°C), extended (48+ hours) distillation yielded to essential oil recovery. The antioxidant capacity (ABTS assay), radical scavenging activity (DPPH assay), and reducing power (FRAP assay) of these extracts were comparatively evaluated. The essential oil, characterized by GC-MS, exhibited the highest antioxidant activity (90.94% ABTS, 90.82% DPPH, 90.34 reducing power), with key constituents including 1, 3-Cyclohexadiene derivatives (19.79%, 18.84%, 14.19%), Beta-Bisabolene (13.26%), Ambrein (4.68%), and Ambroxan (4.22%). The enhanced antioxidant effect observed in the essential oil obtained through this modified distillation yielded suggests improved preservation of volatile antioxidants compared to conventional methods. This research highlights the benefits of an optimized distillation yielded strategy for maximizing the recovery of antioxidant-rich essential oil from ginger, offering a promising alternative for industrial applications.
