Constraints faced by farmers in pig rearing management practices in Lalitpur district of Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

The study was conducted in Lalitpur district of Uttar Pradesh during 2023-2024 to identify constraints faced by farmers in adopting recommended pig rearing management practices. Five villages—Gurha, Kyolari, Bamhori, Bangruwa, and Chhapchhaul—were randomly selected, and data were collected from 110 piggery farmers using a structured interview schedule. The data were analyzed using percentage analysis. Major technological constraints included high cost of improved breeds (88.18%), lack of knowledge (60.90%), and disease susceptibility (47.27%). Constraints in vaccination, feeding, and disease control were also significant, mainly due to high costs and limited awareness. Marketing and transport issues, like poor marketing structure (84.54%) and high transportation charges (59.09%), further hindered progress. Situational and social barriers such as temperature fluctuations (55.45%), lack of education (86.36%), and untouchability (88.18%) were critical. Institutional issues included lack of awareness about support schemes (65.45%). Farmers suggested training (83.63%), financial support, and timely veterinary services as key improvements. The study highlights the need for integrated efforts in education, infrastructure, and institutional support to enhance pig farming practices.
