Evaluation of irrigation water sources: Implications for crop health and soil sustainability

Abstract

This study investigates the quality of irrigation water and its significant impact on agricultural productivity and food safety. In India, agriculture is a vital sector contributing approximately 17-18% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and supporting the livelihoods of over 50% of the population. Therefore, evaluating the quality of water used for irrigation is crucial for promoting sustainable agricultural practices and safeguarding crop health. Water samples were collected from various irrigation sources, including rivers, wells, and canals, and analyzed under controlled laboratory conditions. Global Positioning System (GPS) technology was employed to accurately record the sampling locations. The collected samples were assessed for the presence of harmful contaminants and their potential effects on crop health and agricultural yield. The analysis was conducted by the guidelines established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and contributes to the objectives of the National Food Security Mission (NFSM). The findings highlight the critical importance of regular water quality monitoring and the need for continuous research and development (R&D) to prevent long-term soil degradation and promote effective water management practices. By addressing the challenges associated with irrigation water quality, this study provides valuable insights and actionable recommendations for improving water management strategies among farmers. Ultimately, enhancing irrigation water quality is essential for increasing agricultural productivity, ensuring food safety, and achieving food security for the growing population in India.
