Effect of integrated nutrient management on growth and yield of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.)

Abstract

This study evaluates the effect of Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) on the growth, yield, and economic viability of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.). The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Farm of MGCAVV, Razola, during the Rabi season of 2023 using a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with twelve treatments incorporating organic and inorganic nutrient sources. The treatment T9 (Vermicompost 2.5 t/ha + Poultry Manure 2.5 t/ha) resulted in the highest plant height (68.12 cm), maximum branches (10.34), early flowering (47.21 days), and maximum pod yield (19.11 pods per plant). Additionally, T9 produced the highest seed yield (17.56 q/ha) and net profit (₹30,550/ha), making it the most effective INM practice for optimizing cowpea production. These findings highlight that the integration of organic manures enhances productivity while improving soil fertility, presenting a sustainable approach to cowpea cultivation.
