Molecular detection and in vitro antifungal study of Microsporum canis isolated from cat: A case report
Abstract
In several countries, dermatophytosis is a ubiquitous fungal disease that affects both humans and animals. They are septate fungi with an affinity for keratinized structures that colonize and invade skin, hairs, and nails. Dermatophytosis is a highly contagious fungal disease that has significant zoonotic potential and affects both human and animal health. The classical lesion of dermatophytosis is circular or “wheel-like,” commonly known as “ringworm” disease. In dermatophytes, resistance to antifungals has begun to emerge, and there are techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of antifungals against dermatophytes. The present case study was undertaken to isolate and identify Microsporum spp. from cats. The animal had a history of extensive pruritus, erythema, and alopecia. The clinical samples were collected from the affected body parts and inoculated into different diagnostic media. The fungal sample was stained with lactophenol cotton blue stain (LPCB). Based on the morphological features of the colony on the diagnostic media, Microsporum spp. (M. canis) were recognised macroscopically and microscopically by examining the macroconidia and microconidia, respectively. The In vitro antifungal susceptibility test was performed using the disc diffusion method.
