Morphological characterization of land races of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.)

Abstract

The study was conducted with 34 landraces of Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) which were collected from the farmers of various agro-climatic zones of Tamil Nadu. Data were collected on plant morphology. Analysis of Variance showed significant variation for yield attributing characters. The average length of the fruit was (14.46 cm). The longest fruit was produced by improved long green genotype (20 cm). The maximum diameter of the fruit was observed in Kanyakumari Local 1 (6.73 cm). The KCSG 23021 genotype produced the first female flower in (36.33days) and the KCSG 23022 genotype was the last with (56.07) days to produce the first female flower. First male flower was produced in KCSG 23020 genotype and produced late in KCSG 23024-2 genotype. The landraces and genotypes provided the scope of further exploitation in genetic improvement of Cucumis sativus L.
