Relationship between value preference and mental well-being of higher secondary school students in relation to their socio economic status and type of management of school

Abstract

Values are some moral qualities in an individual that provide him proper concept about good or bad, make him eligible for the society and guide to the right way of life. In the present study, seven kinds of values are emphasized such as social value, moral value, environmental value, scientific value, aesthetic value, democratic value and spiritual values. Main objective of the study was to explore the relationship between value preference and mental well-being with respect to socio economic status and type of management of school. This is a descriptive survey type of research. A total of 400 students were selected as the sample of the study. Stratified proportionate sampling technique was adopted to select the students. Ten schools were selected out of which eight schools were Government and other two schools were private. The value preference scale was developed and standardized by the researcher for assessing the values among the students. For measuring the mental well-being of the students researcher used a ready-made standardized tool namely psychological well-being scale developed by Dr. Devendra Sing Sisodia and Ms. Pooja Choudhary (2012) [41]. Mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA and correlation coefficient were computed to analyze the data. Findings revealed that most of the students possessed average value. Higher Secondary government school students have better values then the private school students. But no significant difference has been found among the different socio-economic group in terms of their value reference. Again socio- economic status and type of management of school have no significant impact on mental well-being of the students. It is seen that a strong significant relationship was found between value preference and mental wellbeing of the students.
