A clinical study to assess the efficacy of Rhus Toxicodendron in post chikungunya arthralgia

Abstract

Background: Chikungunya is debilitating viral but non-fatal disease and is spread by the bite of Aedes mosquito. Chikungunya usually starts suddenly with fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, joints pains and skinrash. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of Rhus Toxicodendron medicine in the cases of post chikungunya arthralgia. Materials and Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted to see the effectiveness of Rhus Toxicodendron medicine in the cases suffering from post chikungunya arthralgia. 50 cases were selected from outpatient department of HKES Dr. Maalakaraddy Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. The duration of study is for 6 months. In this study out of 50 cases, the highest incidence seen in the age group of 51-60 years (48%), followed by 41-50 years (30%), followed by 61-70 years (14%) and least in the age group of 30-40 years (08%). In this study of 50 cases, 23 (46%) were females and 27 (54%) were males. In the study of 50 cases, 200 and 1M potency of Rhus Toxicodendron has been used as the case demand. In this study of 50 cases, 08 (16%) cases belong to labour class, 10 (20%) cases belong to Housewives class, 02 (04%) cases belong to tailor class, 05 (10%) cases belong to farmers class, 20 (40%) cases belong to teacher class and 05 (10%) cases belong to auto drivers class. Numeric pain rating scale is used to assess the result. Scores will be collected before and after the treatment and results are analyzed. Final conclusion will be made on the basis of results. Data will be analyzed with help of Paired ‘t’ test by using SPSS 16.0 version software.
