Unveiling the protective potential: Naringenin's role in mitigating methotrexate induced hematological alterations

Abstract

The present study investigates the potential ameliorative effects of Naringenin on Methotrexate induced toxicity in Wistar rats, focusing on body weights and hematological parameters. The experiment was conducted in accordance with Institutional Animal Ethics Committee guidelines, utilizing 24 healthy male Wistar rats (200-220 g) distributed into four groups, each comprising six rats. Group 1 served as the control, group 2 was treated with Methotrexate at 5mg/kg body weight i.p once a week. Group 3 received Naringenin at a dosage of 50mg/kg body weight orally once a week, and group 4 received both Naringenin at 50mg/kg body weight orally daily and Methotrexate at 5mg/kg body weight i.p once a week. The experiment spanned 28 days, with the rats being sacrificed on the 29th day. Results indicated a significant (p<0.05) reduction in body weight in group 2 rats, while hematological parameters were significantly diminished in the same group. Notably, group 4, treated with Naringenin, exhibited a substantial improvement in all hematological parameters compared to toxin treated group.
