Coronary artery disease in young adults undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention

Abstract

Background: Low- and middle-income nations bear a significant share of the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is the leading cause of death and morbidity globally. Assessing the clinical and angiographic features of young people with coronary artery disease (CAD) who had undergone percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was the goal of this study. Methods: This prospective observational registry research involved 279 patients with recent acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), recent attack non-STE acute coronary syndrome (ACS), and chronic coronary syndrome (CCS) who received PCI. The patients were splitted into two groups: ACS Primary PCI (Group I, n = 232) and CCS Elective PCI (Group II, n = 47). Results: Regarding wall motion abnormality, mitral valve incompetence assessment, and ejection fraction were a significant difference between both groups. Regarding CAD and PCI procedure and complication: MACE, number of diseased vessels, number of Drug Eluting stents (DES) used during PCI, post stent dilatation at site of lesion, using of Glycoprotein IIb / IIIa inhibitors during PCI, TIMI flow before and after PCI and (Left anterior descending and right coronary artery stenting) were a significant difference between both groups. Conclusions: Egyptian patients, primarily those with ACS patients were younger, more likely to have a positive family history of hypertension, diabetes, and smoking, and they also experienced a longer interval between the beginning of symptoms of ischemia and their initial visit to the doctor. The recommended reperfusion approach for ACS patients, mostly STEMI patients, is primary PCI.
