Remote sensing and GIS: Important tools for agricultural insect pest monitoring

Abstract

Traditional pest monitoring methods require a lot of work and time, which usually delays the response to pest outbreaks. However, pest monitoring practices have evolved with the advent of remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), allowing farmers and agricultural researchers to take a more proactive and accurate approach. GIS facilitates remote sensing by allowing the geographical investigation of pest distribution patterns and their interaction with various environmental characteristics, such as soil conditions, temperature, and humidity. With the aid of GIS mapping technologies, agricultural professionals can visualise the potential expansion of insect pests and predict their migration trends. By using this prediction ability, farmers can take prompt pest management action to stop crop damage before it worsens.
