A survey of ethno veterinary anthelmintics plants used by traditional veterinary healers for goats found in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam Districts of Tamil Nadu

Abstract

The survey of ethno veterinary plants used as anthelmintics in goats were carried out in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts of Tamil Nadu. A total of 63 plants belonging 33 families used as anthelmintics in goats were documented during the study. Cucurbitaceae and Zingerberaceae (each 7.94% were the major plant family) were two families to which more numbers of anthelmintic plants belonged. Leaves (44%) were the predominant plant part utilised with of the plants being herbs (42.86%). Majority of the anthelminthic plants were cultivated crops (44.44%) with most of the plants / plant parts used in fresh forms for preparation of ethno veterinary anthlemintics in goats.
