Comparative histocompartmentalization in Peyer’s patches and solitary lymphoid nodules in porcine intestines

Abstract

The lymphoid tissues in the gut of crossbred growing piglet were found in four (4) forms: intra epithelial lymphocytes, located between the intestinal lining epithelial cells; scattered lymphocytes throughout the lamina propria; Peyer’s patches (PP) in nodular form in the lamina propria and solitary lymphoid nodules (SLN) or isolated lymphoid follicles (ILF) or lympho-glandular complexes (LGC) in the lamina propria of tunica mucosa and in tunica submucosa. Peyer’s patches had lymphoid follicles in the tunica submucosa covered by dome area and the outermost covering the follicle-associated epithelium (FAE). Interfollicular areas had the high endothelial venules. Almost similar features were observed in the lymphoglandular complexes, except the absence of distinct follicle associated epithelium and the abundance of the glandular structures. The FAE of both PP and LGC had less goblet cell and had microfold cell.
