Analysis of periodontitis severity and associated factors in patients from a periodontology clinic in Durango, Meacute;xico: A retrospective descriptive study

Abstract

Background and Aims: Periodontitis is a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease that affects the supporting structures of teeth and has significant implications for oral health and overall well-being. Understanding the severity and associated factors of periodontitis is essential for effective diagnosis and treatment planning. This retrospective descriptive study aimed to determine the severity of periodontitis in patients attending the clinic of Periodoncia e Implantología in the División de Estudios de Posgrado e Investigación from the Facultad de Odontología (FAOD) of the Universidad Juárez del Estado de Durango (UJED) in Durango, Durango, México. Materials and Methods: The clinical records of patients diagnosed with periodontitis from January 2016 to November 2021 were reviewed. Data collection included demographic information, periodontal diagnosis, and modifying factors such as diabetes and smoking status. Statistical analysis was performed via descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Results: A total of 208 clinical records met the inclusion criteria. The prevalence of periodontitis was highest in the 50-64 years age group (38.9%). Stage II (33.2%) and III (29.3%) were most prevalent, with grade A (42.8%) and B (38%) being the most common. Diabetes (7.2%) and smoking (13.5%) were statistically significant factors influencing periodontitis severity. Conclusion: Understanding the severity and associated factors of periodontitis is crucial for developing effective treatment plans and improving patient outcomes. Efforts to increase awareness of oral hygiene and control modifying factors are essential for reducing the prevalence of severe periodontitis in the future.
