A literature review on five medicinal plants of apocynaceae family available in Bangladesh

Journal of Medicinal Plants Studies · 2025 · Vol. 13(2) · pp. 50–60

Abstract

Apocynaceae is one of the largest families in the kingdom of plants. For the literature study, five medicinal plants from the Apocynaceae family that are native to Bangladesh were selected. The family of flowering plants has 424 genera and over 4,600 species of trees, shrubs, woody vines, and herbs. The majority of the family's adherents are located in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. The five medicinal herbs employed in this study are Catharanthus roseus, Adenium obesum, Calotropis gigantean, Vinca major and Alstonia scholaris. The research publications in the Apocynaceae family published between 1973 and 2024 are the main subject of this review. Research articles on certain medicinal plants showed a wide range of therapeutic qualities, such as analgesia, antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, antiproliferative, antiradical, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic effects. Triterpenoids, phenolic compounds, alkaloids, terpenoids, proteins, carbohydrates, reducing sugar, tannins, flavonoids, amino acids, saponins, steroids, sterols, anthraquinone glycosides, polyphenols, terpenes, glycoproteins, and aromatic acids are examples of phytochemical components. The current body of knowledge regarding the pharmacological, botanical, traditional, and phytochemical characteristics of these plants has been compiled from a wide range of research papers and online sources that have all been posted on search engine websites such as Pub Med, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Research Gate, and others. Based on a survey of the literature, the current work is a short project that examines their possibility, potential, and prevalence in the medical profession. It would also be advantageous if any of the plants were to be used for study in the future.
