Character association and path analysis for yield and yield attributing traits in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) genotypes

Abstract

The current study was conducted in Kharif, 2023 at Research farm, Tantia University, Srigangangar to estimate the association among yield attributes and their direct and indirect impact on seed cotton yield. The highly significant genotypic differences were observed for all the traits, indicating the existence of large amount of variation among the 30 genotypes of cotton. The seed cotton yield per plant showed highly positive and significant correlation at both genotypic and phenotypic levels with 100-seed weight, boll weight and lint yield indicating strong and mutual relationship of seed cotton yield per plant with another three traits. The maximum positive direct effect on seed cotton yield per plant was demonstrated by 100-seed weight followed by ginning outturn, micronaire value, lint yield, days to 50 percent flowering, boll weight and upper half mean length. Therefore, by improving these characters there will be direct impact on dependent trait i.e., seed cotton yield per plant.
