Evaluation of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) genotypes for quality traits and economic feasibility under Malwa condition

Abstract

Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum), a versatile and nutritionally rich crop, are extensively cultivated worldwide for both fresh consumption and processing. This study evaluates the quality traits and economic feasibility of twelve tomato genotypes grown under the agro-climatic conditions of the Malwa region, Madhya Pradesh, India, during the Rabi season of 2022-2023. The experiment, conducted in a Randomized Block Design with three replications, assessed parameters such as fruit color, shape, pericarp thickness, number of locules, total soluble solids (TSS), acidity, keeping quality, and economic returns. The results revealed significant variation among genotypes. Genotype TDSO-1 exhibited superior quality traits, including maximum pericarp thickness (4.80 mm), locules (7.04), TSS (7.53°Brix), and keeping quality (17.6 days). TDJ-2 demonstrated the highest acidity (0.148%). Economic analysis identified TDJP-3 as the most profitable genotype, with the highest net return (Rs. 291,550/ha) and cost-benefit ratio (1:3.61), followed by TDSO-1. These findings highlight the potential of specific genotypes for improving tomato productivity and profitability in the Malwa region, providing valuable insights for farmers and researchers to optimize cultivation strategies.
