Crop-suitability analysis by application of geospatial techniques for groundnut production in Khordha district of Odisha

Abstract

This investigation sought to assess the appropriateness of groundnut cultivation in the Khordha District of state Odisha, India, utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques. Various factors were taken into account, such as rainfall, temperature, pH levels, organic carbon content, and slope. A crop-suitability model was created using the Model Builder feature in ArcGIS 10.8. The assessment classified groundnut suitability into two categories: S1 (82.5%) and S2 (17.5%). The findings indicated that the region possesses high fertility, suggesting that agricultural yields could be improved by growing groundnuts in areas deemed highly and moderately suitable. It is essential to identify crop suitability classes to maximize groundnut production on the available land. Cultivating crops in their most appropriate locations underscores the importance of conducting crop-suitability analyses to promote sustainable agricultural practices.
